The first year of paid parking was a huge success, but we were able to learn a lot from it too. As with any first-time endeavor, it was a learning curve for both staff and citizens. Town staff and Pivot Parking worked hard to provide designated parking areas and expand what parking we had previously and to make the payment process easy to navigate. As we evaluated the success of the first season in comparison to the purpose of instituting the program, it led us to making some minor adjustments to better fit the goals of the program.
You will see an improved customer portal experience this year for purchasing passes along with new signage to help everyone navigate parking spaces and pricing. We were happy to see that paid parking met its goal with providing a safer island environment with less congestion in our streets, along with having a great management company to provide excellent customer service. Despite being a new program, it was easy to navigate and was successful in providing additional income for our future beach nourishment projects. One of the challenges we saw was pricing for hourly parking that correlated to proximity of parking space to the beach. Visitors felt that pricing should be based on distance from the beachfront, and we agree. Last season, our Central Business District parking spaces were filled to capacity, while back lots weren’t often used as they were the same pricing. This year, we have made a slight change to help support even usage of all available lots and spaces and fair pricing for our citizens based on the location of where they park. You will see our premier parking spots close to the beach will be $5/hr, while outlying lots and spaces will remain $3/hr to accommodate an improved experience for this season. Seasonal pass pricing remains the same with military, senior citizens, and ETJ discounts available. Resident passes remain free with allowance for up to 2 free passes per landowner.
